Occupational therapy support doesn’t just happen in the clinic. For many children, teens and families, some of the most meaningful progress happens at home, where daily routines, relationships and challenges naturally occur.
A home visit allows an occupational therapist (OT) to observe your child within their everyday environment and provide practical, tailored strategies that support your family’s goals in real time.
What Is a Home Visit?
A home visit is an OT session that takes place in your home environment rather than in the clinic.
These sessions are primarily observation-based and help OTs gain a deeper understanding of:
- Your child’s daily routines and transitions
- The physical home environment
- Family relationships and interactions
- Emotional regulation patterns
- Independence and self-care skills within the home
Home visits also create opportunities for parent coaching throughout the session. Rather than discussing strategies theoretically, your OT can provide practical recommendations and support as situations arise naturally.
What Can a Home Visit Support?
Every family is different, which means home visits can be tailored to a wide range of goals and needs.
Some common areas a home visit may support include:
Developing Consistent Home Routines
Many children benefit from predictable routines, particularly around:
- Morning routines
- After-school transitions
- Mealtimes
- Homework
- Bedtime routines
An OT can help identify barriers within these routines and provide strategies that better support your child’s regulation, independence and participation.
Creating a Supportive Home Environment
Your child’s sensory processing needs can significantly impact how they engage within the home.
A home visit allows your OT to observe the environment and provide recommendations that may support:
- Emotional regulation
- Attention and focus
- Transitions between tasks
- Independence in daily activities
- Reduced overwhelm and stress within the home
These recommendations are always individualised and designed to fit realistically within your family’s lifestyle.
Supporting Home and Family Goals
Home visits provide an opportunity to focus directly on goals that are difficult to replicate within a clinic setting. This may include:
- Increasing independence with self-care tasks
- Developing household responsibilities
- Supporting safe independence for older children and teens
- Improving family routines and participation
- Navigating sibling dynamics and relationships
Because the OT is observing your child in their natural environment, they can often identify practical strategies that are immediately relevant and achievable.
Gaining Insight Into Family and Sibling Relationships
Family relationships play an important role in a child’s emotional regulation and participation at home.
Home visits can provide valuable insight into sibling interactions, co-regulation strategies and family dynamics, helping OTs better support both the child and their caregivers.
Who Might Benefit From a Home Visit?
Home visits can be beneficial for a wide range of children and families, including:
Older Children and Teens
Older children and teenagers working towards greater independence in the home may benefit from support with:
- Daily living skills
- Organisation and routines
- Completing tasks independently
- Emotional regulation at home
- Building confidence in everyday responsibilities
Younger Children Working on Emotional Regulation
For younger children, home visits can help OTs observe regulation challenges within real-life situations and support families with strategies that are practical and achievable within the home environment.
Parents Seeking Real-Time Support
Many parents find home visits particularly valuable because they receive immediate feedback and coaching while navigating everyday challenges.
This may include support with:
- Emotional regulation strategies
- Creating consistent routines
- Encouraging independence safely
- Managing transitions
- Responding to challenging behaviours
How Do I Organise a Home Visit?
If you think a home visit may benefit your child or family, the first step is to discuss it with your OT. Together, you can determine whether a home-based session is suitable for your child’s goals and needs.
Before the visit, your OT will complete a short home visit risk assessment, which typically takes around 15 minutes.
What Is Included in the Session Time?
Home visits are generally billed as approximately two hours of service time. This usually includes:
- Travel to and from your home
- The face-to-face home visit session
- Preparation and planning
- Clinical notes and recommendations completed after the session
Your OT will discuss the expected timing and structure with you prior to the visit so you know exactly what to expect.
Why Families Find Home Visits Valuable
Home visits allow occupational therapy support to become more personalised, practical and meaningful. By working within your child’s natural environment, OTs can provide strategies that fit into everyday family life and support long-term success at home.
