One- on- one Occupational Therapy sessions are one of the best ways to help your child to achieve their goals. In these sessions, your child's Occupational Therapist will engage your child in individualised, fun, and meaningful activities that will support them in developing their skills. The Occupational Therapist will also be able to provide individualised strategies and tools that can be used to support your child's participation and performance in the home, community and school settings.
Parent Planning Meeting
Before beginning one-on-one sessions, you will be booked in for a Parent Planning meeting, an initial consultation with one of our Occupational Therapists. Parent planning meetings are held online and occur over 50minutes. During this time the OT will support you to identify and prioritise goals and formulate a therapy plan for your child, including determining what service(s) will best address the child’s goals. This includes discussing various areas of your child’s development and understanding your child’s everyday life. Children do not attend this meeting, so you can have an open discussion about your child’s needs. After your meeting, the OT will spend the remainder of the time creating a summary of your meeting with OT goals and recommendations to be sent to you. This will also include any additional resources and information about other services they feel your child may benefit from.Individual OT Intervention
Once your child commences on-on-one sessions, their Occupational Therapist will review the information gathered and OT goals set in your parent planning meeting. Your child’s OT will then create and implement an intervention plan to address these specific goals. These goals will be regularly reviewed by your child’s OT to ensure that interventions are meeting desired outcomes. Goals and interventions are flexible to the ever-evolving needs of you and your child. Your child’s OT may also suggest activities, tools or strategies that you can do at home or that can be implemented at your child's school to help your child continue practicing their skills. Throughout OT intervention, your child’s OT may also recommend other OT services such as group programs should they meet the goals of your child. If required, your child's OT may ask to speak with your child's other supports (teachers, educators and other health professionals) to gain further information about your child's participation in different settings and ensure all your child's supports are working together.
Our in-clinic Occupational Therapy sessions run for 70 minutes (50 minutes face to face, 20 minutes of notes and resources). How long your child engages in Occupational Therapy intervention depends on their goals and progress, however this is always up to you.
Assessments
At Occupational Therapy Helping Children, we strongly believe in using a holistic, collaborative approach. Hence, it is not required to engage in OT assessments to access any part of our service. However, if you require OT assessments for school supports, funding or other reasons, we offer a range of assessments to meet these needs. This includes HSC School Provisions Assessments, Functional Capacity Assessments, OT Assessments for access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme and Assistive Technology Assessments. Depending on the type of assessment, our assessments take approximately 1.5 hours and can involve a range of standardised and non-standardised tests specifically chosen to meet the assessment needs. Following the assessment, a comprehensive report will be written, tailored to meet the purpose of the assessment. You can read more about our Initial Assessments in our FAQs.
