Parent Coaching
At Occupational Therapy Helping Children, our OTs use a variety of approaches in their sessions with your child to ensure progress towards their goals. One technique that is widely documented in the literature as being a sustainable way to ensure your child continually advances towards their goals is a parent coaching approach.
Using a coach approach means that we support parents in achieving goals for themselves and their children. It is a collaborative, problem solving approach capitalizing on families knowledge of their home situation and the OTs trained expertise. Parents are guided to identifying and implementing effective solutions for their families. Parents are the experts after all, it makes sense to capitalise on their knowledge, strengths, resources, and ideas to ensure the therapy options are a good for their home. When parents are feeling more confident about what works for their children, they can create further developmental opportunities for their child throughout the day.
Parent coaching sessions occur face to face or online without the child present. It allows the OT & parent/carer to talk openly and the parent can come up with solution focused goals with the support of the OT. Some popular topics include self-care, toileting, behavior and implementing other therapy plans and strategies in the home.
The OT’s on our team are all experienced with parent coaching. If you feel that you would like to set up some parent coaching sessions with Lisa Hughes or one of her Occupational Therapists please get in touch.
