Online OT Sessions
Online OT therapy also known as telepractice or telehealth has become increasingly popular in response to the outbreak of Covid 19, as it allows children to keep achieving their therapy goals during times of social distancing. Telepractice has been in use for many years to support children who live in rural and remote areas.
At Occupational Therapy Helping Children, telepractice is the delivery of assessment, intervention, consultation and education at a distance by linking an OT to their client via technology such as web-based videoconferencing. It is designed to empower families and caregivers to deliver therapy in the home setting supported by their OT. Telepractice is emerging as a well-founded and evidence based solution for children to continue accessing occupational therapy.
For younger children or children with delayed language development, therapy will be delivered using parent coaching. This means the parent is involved in the session and is guided by the OT on how to implement the therapy. Therapy using a “coach” approach is linked with better outcomes as parents learn strategies that can be carried over into their day to day lives.
For older children who can manage technology themselves, they will be able to participate in telepractice sessions independently to meet their OT goals. For children who have a strong interest in technology, often find telepractice more engaging than face to face therapy.
To set up for a telepractice session from home you will need:-
- Good internet connection & speed
- Laptop or computer with webcam and working microphone & audio.
- Lined & unlined paper, stationary
- Any items recommended by your OT.
To help your sessions run well at home, try and find a quiet space with the least amount of distractions, and have the computer set up on a table with a chair for your child to sit in. Good positioning will help your child remain focused on the session.
Telehealth provides a continued contact and engagement in therapy and provides parents with the confidence to implement strategies and education at home.
