Canon ball kicks are a great activity for your child, providing proprioceptive input which aids in body awareness. Additionally, this activity fosters the development of core strength, enhances bilateral coordination, and promotes balance.
To complete this activity, you will need an exercise/yoga ball. Start by having your child lay on their backs propped up by their elbows. Prompt your child to stay firm in their shoulders rather than slouching as this ensures they are using their muscles rather than stabilising at the joint. Take a few steps back and gently throw the ball and encourage your child to kick the cannonball back towards you. It is common for children (and adults) to hold their breath when using their core muscles – A great trick for this is to count allowed for each throw or kick.
To make this activity more challenging you can create more space between you and your child. Play around with the direction of the ball to add another element to this activity. Throwing it higher up or lower to the ground If this activity is challenging for your child you can roll the ball along the ground.
